No new Covid-related deaths reported in Durham
Whitby: Durham Region Health Department yesterday said 1,201 Covid-19 cases have been reported in the region since February 29.
The count on Wednesday had stood at 1,194.
Of the total cases, 39 are hospitalized, of which five are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Deaths total 153, of which 131 were in long term care homes (LTCH). Recoveries number 833.
Durham Health yesterday updated the overall community-wide Covid breakdown. The highest number of cases at 445 were in Pickering followed by 312 in Ajax and 197 in Oshawa.
Death Toll:
- Of the 82 reported deaths in Pickering, 80 were in LTCH – no change
- Of the 32 reported deaths in Ajax, 29 were in LTCH – no change
- Three deaths were reported in Whitby [none in LTCH] – no change
- Of the 21 reported deaths in Oshawa, 15 were in LTCH – no change
- Seven deaths were reported in Clarington [none in LTCH] – no change
- Eight deaths were reported in Uxbridge, seven in LTCH – no change
- No deaths have been reported in Scugog or Brock – no change

21,494 cases in Ontario; 1,798 deaths
72,536 Covid-19 cases in Canada Count
Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, said as of Thursday, May 14, there are 72,536 Covid-19 cases, including 5,337 deaths, across Canada.
More than 35,523 or 49 percent of cases are now recovered.
Labs across Canada have tested 1,199,591 people for Covid-19 to date, with about 6 percent of these testing positive.
“We are now testing an average of 26 to 28 thousand people daily. These numbers represent what we know at this moment, and change quickly. I encourage Canadians to consult Canada.ca/coronavirus for the latest information,” she said.
“Covid-19 continues to be a serious global health threat, and the situation is evolving daily. Our collective efforts to slow the spread of Covid-19 and bring the epidemic under control have flattened the curve in Canada. The slowed rate of growth has resulted in reduced daily case counts but there is still active transmission in many areas of the country so we must remain vigilant,” she pointed out.
“I look forward to the cautious reopening of Canada’s recreational, social and economic spaces. Thank you for your continued efforts to keep everyone safe,” Dr. Tam added.
