Highways 418 and 407 extension open Monday

From Monday, December 9th, the extensions of Highways 407 ad 418 will be open to drivers.

The extensions connect Highway 407 to Highway 35/115. Highway 418 will provide another north/south connection from Highway 407 to Highway 401.

Although connected to the 407 Express Toll Route (ETR)—which is operated by a private company—Highway 407 is a separate entity owned and operated by the province.

Highway 407 was constructed in two phases and includes its offshoots Highway 412 and Highway 418. All three of these highways will be tolled at the same rates. Phase 1 comprised Highway 407 and Highway 412 (formerly known as the West Durham Link). Interchanges on Highway 407 are at Brock Road, Lake Ridge Road, Highway 7, Baldwin Street, Thickson Road, Simcoe Street and Harmony Road. Interchanges on Highway 412 are at Highway 7, Taunton Road, Dundas Street and Highway 401.

Phase 2 was to be completed by 2020 but is now opening. It will include Highway 418 (formerly known as the East Durham Link). Blackbird was selected by Infrastructure Ontario as the consortium to design, build, finance and maintain the 407 East Phase 2 project, which extends Highway 407 from Harmony Road to Highway 35/115 and includes construction of Highway 418, a new four-lane highway linking Highways 401 and 407.

The completed Highway 407 will run east-west from Brock Road in Pickering to Highway 35/155. Highways 412 and 418 will run north-south, connecting Highway 407 with Highway 401.

Better Connections

“The completion of the Highway 407 East project will connect communities and greatly improve our transportation network in this region,” said Vijay Thanigasalam, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. “I’m pleased to announce that the last phase will open ahead of schedule.”

“Connecting Highway 407 to Highway 35/115 will create a vital link between Peterborough and the Greater Toronto Area,” said Dave Smith, MPP for Peterborough-Kawartha. “The extension of this highway will help attract jobs and economic growth to this region.”

“Extending Highway 407 provides another connection in Durham that will help move people and goods,” said Lorne Coe, MPP for Whitby. “I’m excited to see the economic opportunity this project will bring for the entire region and beyond.”
