A Pickering teen is facing numerous firearms-related charges after officers located a suspect vehicle with stolen plates.
On Wednesday, August 7 at 8 pm,, members of West Division observed a four-door Pontiac parked at the rear of Sir JA Macdonald Public School on Balaton Avenue in Pickering. The suspect parked his vehicle and walked over to another vehicle described as a four-door Nissan Altima.
The suspect and driver of the Altima walked away together and upon their return, officers approached the suspect who fled on foot. The suspect was arrested near a playground with a loaded firearm in his possession. The driver of the Altima fled in his vehicle at a high rate of speed through residential streets.
Officers stopped the Altima after it mounted a curb and struck a street sign. The driver was arrested for several driving offences and his vehicle was impounded.
Lucas Van Staveren, age 19, of Monica Cook Place in Pickering faces numerous firearm-related charges including: Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition; Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm; Carry Concealed Weapon; Contravene Storage; Careless Carry of Firearm and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.
He was held for a bail hearing.
Jayson Powell, age 20 of Tatra Drive in Pickering is charged with Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance; Race a Motor Vehicle (Highway Traffic Act) and Fail to Remain (Highway Traffic Act).
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
