Students and residents reacting to the ongoing strike at Durham College in Oshawa seem to have little sympathy for the striking workers.
Among the many comments received on social media and as letters to the editor, very few had a positive stance.
“One of the stands they are taking is against the provincial government’s plans to privatize college education. Anyone with children in elementary, high school, and perhaps even college should be concerned. Times are tough… I know I don’t want to have to figure out where private tuition rates are going to come from,” said one of the supporters.
In response, another said: “That’s fine to address issues, but stop interrupting people’s lives. One day one of those protesters will get run over and they’ll meet their match.”
Citizen’s Arrest
“Drive slowly and push them out of the way. No public sympathy for the chronic strikers in education, except from fellow educators. You could also get out with a bunch of pairs of handcuffs and arrest them under section 432(1) of the criminal code, followed by calling the police,” said another.
Bylaw Officer
“As someone who is a first time student I agree with you. A bylaw officer should be there as well. I want them to be fairly paid like everyone else but right now their priority should be our EDUCATION! That’s what I paid for. They wanna strike here’s some advice. Next time do it later in the semester or before then. NOT AT THE START! I rest my case,” said a student.
“I just wanted to stand up for the innocent students because they are the ones paying the salaries. But the protesters lied to the president. I was there yesterday [Friday], talking to people in their cars and watching it happen right in front of me,” said Jan Hardock, a resident.
“They were actually blocking each car for about five minutes, which is why it ended up taking 40 minutes to 2 hours to get into the parking lot. I also want to let you know that I have a picture proving that I was right there in the parking lot in front of them, watching how long they were holding up the cars! That is why [it] makes me very upset,” she added.
