Attempted murder with crowbar in Whitby

Durham police said a Whitby man has been charged with attempted murder after attacking a fellow renter at a Whitby residence on Saturday

On February 8 at about 7:15 am, officers from Central West Division responded to a call involving an assault with a weapon on Annes Street in Whitby. They located an elderly male suffering from multiple injuries as a result of being struck by a crowbar. The victim was taken to hospital and a lone male suspect was arrested at the scene, said a police media release.

Investigation revealed that both men were renting rooms at the residence. Just after 7 am, the suspect entered the room of the victim and attacked him with a crowbar. A witness heard the commotion and came to the rescue of the victim, it added.

Charles Avery, age 45, of Annes Street in Whitby is charged with: Attempted Murder; Aggravated Assault; Assault with a Weapon; Weapons Dangerous and Threatening. He was held for a bail hearing.
