Brock orders all ATVs off township roads and ditches

Brock has prohibited all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and off-road vehicles on all roadways (including ditches and sidewalks of such roadways) in Brock Township from April 1– November 30.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation details the legal requirements of operating an ATV/ORV off and on roads:

Off-Road Riding: For off-road riding, your ATV/ORV must be registered and display a rear license plate. It must be insured under a motor vehicle liability policy.

For off-road riding, an ORV driver must:

  • be at least 12 years old, unless directly supervised by an adult or while driving on land occupied by the owner of the ORV
  • carry the ORV’s registration permit or a true copy
  • Drivers and passengers must wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap.

Crossing a Highway: The driver can directly cross a highway on an ORV where permitted only if:

  • it is registered and displays a rear licence plate
  • it is insured under a motor vehicle liability policy
  • the driver is at least 16 years old and has a valid driver’s licence of any class
  • the driver and passengers are wearing approved motorcycle helmets, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap.

On-Road Riding (December 1–March 31): ATV/ORVs having low pressure bearing tires are permitted on Township of Brock Municipal roadways between December 1st – March 31st. These vehicles are not permitted on regional roads or provincial highways that run through the Township of Brock.

For on-road riding, an ORV driver must:

  • be at least 16 years old
  • hold at least a valid G2 or M2 licence
  • wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap
  • wear a seat belt, where provided
  • travel at speeds less than the posted speed limit, as outlined below.

For on-road riding, a passenger on an ORV*:

  • cannot be under the age of eight
  • must wear a seat belt or use footrests, when applicable
  • must wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap.

*Passengers are not permitted on off-road motorcycles (ORMs)

Riders are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the legal requirements for driving an ATV/ORV, as set out in Ontario’s Off-Road Vehicles ActHighway Traffic Act, and the Township of Brock’s ATV (Off-Road Vehicles) By-law. Thank you for your cooperation.
