Extreme cold warning of -30°C for Durham

Environment Canada and Durham Health have issued an extreme cold warning for Durham Region.

Bitterly cold wind chills near -30°C are expected overnight and into Friday morning, said Environment Canada, adding that temperatures should rise later Friday.

It asked motorists to keep emergency supplies in vehicles such as extra blankets and jumper cables.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside, it reminded adding that outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) also asked motorist to be careful, especially on country roads.

“CAUTION: ICY ROADS in the area of Pickering Concession Rd 9 from the York Durham Townline to Claremont. Use extra care in these areas if you are not able to avoid altogether,” said a DRPS tweet.
