Give feedback on King Street East Streetscape project

Phase 2 of Oshawa’s King Street East Streetscape project will focus on  widening of the sidewalk on the north side of King Street East between Simcoe Street North and Ontario Street. The widening will allow for additional space for pedestrians, landscaping, outdoor patios/cafes, streetscape amenities and businesses.

Residents, businesses and community members have the opportunity to share their feedback on the proposed design:

  • In-person at a Drop-In Open House, where participants can discuss the topic and share feedback directly with City staff. The Drop-In Open Houses will take place in the front lobby of La Quinta Inns & Suites (63 King Street East) between 8 am – 9 am, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm and 5 pm – 7:30 pm on Wednesday, July 10.
  • Online on Connect Oshawa (www.connectoshawa.ca/streetscape) where participants can review the proposed design, share feedback and ask questions.
  • On paper at Service Oshawa, located at City Hall (50 Centre St. S.), where participants can review the proposed design and share feedback.

Information regarding the “Oshawa Downtown Streetscape Design Vision” will also be available at the Drop-In Open Houses and online.
Feedback will be received until end of day Wednesday, July 24 and considered in the development of the final design for Phase 2 of the King Street East Streetscape project.

Phase 2 will be presented to Development Services Committee and Council this year and is scheduled for construction in 2020, subject to approval in the 2020 City budget.

Downtown Plan 20Twenty

Phase 2 of the King Street East Streetscape project addresses goals set out in the Downtown Plan 20Twenty, which includes action items to create a distinct downtown that is recognizable and welcoming to residents, visitors and businesses.

The second phase will follow the pilot project that began in 2018 with public consultation where the city sought feedback regarding three design options for the widening of the sidewalk on the north side of King Street East between Ontario Street and Mary Street North. The detailed design for the pilot project is now complete and construction is scheduled for 2019.

“Phase ‪2 of the King Street East Streetscape project will serve to enhance the urban core and further increase space for pedestrians, feature landscaping, outdoor patios/cafes, streetscape amenities and attract new businesses, while increasing the appeal of Oshawa’s dynamic downtown. The widening of the sidewalks will create unique and appealing spaces that contribute to a high quality urban destination much like many in vibrant cities around the world,” said Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, Chair of the Development Services Committee.
