Heat alert for the weekend in Durham

Environment Canada (EC) has issued a heat alert for the weekend – from Saturday through Sunday, possibly extending into Monday for some areas.

Maximum daytime temperatures are expected to range from 29°C to 33° Celsius (Humidex 36 to 39).

Minimum overnight temperatures are likely to range from 17°C to 20°C.

Hot and humid air can bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category, said EC.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors, it pointed out asking residents to never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Notice of heat alert and designated cooling centre

Pickering said the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex is a designated Cooling Centre.
