Hiding underwater in hot tub doesn’t fool this K-9

After seeing the movies, one would think that dogs cannot follow a scent through water. But this K-9 officer and his dog disproved the notion by locating a suspect who was hiding under the water in a hot tub after fleeing from police on Friday.

On December 13 at 4:15 pm, members of Central East Division responded to an impaired driver near Ritson Road South in Oshawa. Police located the suspect vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu which was reported stolen in Oshawa earlier in the day, Durham Police said in a media release.

Officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicle but it failed to stop. Police pursued the suspect vehicle on Highway 401 until they lost sight of it. The vehicle was located abandoned on Montcalm Avenue in Oshawa. Officers located the suspect and they pursued him on foot through residential backyards. K-9 and uniform officers tracked the suspect to a backyard on Waverly Street in Oshawa, but he was nowhere to be seen.

However, one of the dogs located the suspect hiding inside a hot tub submerged in the water. He was arrested at the scene.

Anthony Moore-Ashman, age 29, of No Fixed Address is facing 20 criminal charges including: Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance; Flight from Police; Possession of Property Obtained by crime; Operate Conveyance while Prohibited and Theft of Motor Vehicle. He was held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with new information about this incident is asked to call D/Cst. Broadfoot of the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2740.
