Assault: Paramedics ask Lakeridge Health to answer

A member of the Durham Paramedics was allegedly assaulted on Saturday night – an event which has caused concern among the emergency services and residents alike.

“One of our members was violently assaulted last night while completing paperwork. These acts against Paramedics will not be tolerated. We are here to help and should not be subjected to physical assault. Our thoughts are with our member during their recovery,” said a Durham Paramedics tweet yesterday evening.

The incident, they said, took place at a Lakeridge Health facility.

“One of our Paramedics was assaulted in one of your facilities in a situation and manner that could have been and should have been avoided. How do you plan on addressing this serious issue? Our members deserve answers,” said another tweet from Durham Region Paramedics.

The paramedics received messages of support.

Clarington Fire Fighters Association said it “fully supports the Durham Region Paramedics CUPE 1764. Violence of any sort against First Responders is unacceptable”.

Heather Scott said paramedics are there to help you so never abuse them!

Cindy Mitchell-Benoit said no one should be assaulted while doing their job. Thoughts are with the victim.

Margaret Wind also, said: “I support all First Responders. 👍There there to help us, so don’t make it difficult for them. Thank you to all the First Responders. 👍🙏.”
