Geotechnical work on Lakeshore East Corridor

Metrolinx has announced the start of Geotechnical Investigative Work within a part of GO train Lakeshore East Corridor beginning from yesterday (January 3).

As part of investigative work for the GO Expansion project, crews will be drilling vertical boreholes to assess ground conditions within the Lakeshore East rail corridor, said a company statement.

“Boreholes will be drilled at various locations across the GO network to collect important information about soil and ground conditions. The results of the investigation will be used to inform the design and planning work for electrification and the GO Expansion program,” it said.

Crews will use a drill rig to perform the investigation works. The drill is rotated and pushed into the ground by the drill head. Once the desired depth is reached, a soil sample is retrieved for analysis.

Residents may experience some noise and vibration from construction vehicles and equipment. On-site noise mitigation measures will be used to minimize the disruption as much as possible. Noise and vibration monitoring will take place to make sure all levels are within allowable limits. Site lighting will be pointed away from residences. The typical noise from the drilling work will be hammering and diesel engines. We apologize for any inconvenience and ask for your patience as we complete this critical work, said Metrolinx.

Pedestrians and motorists will be routed around the work area(s) where necessary. No impacts to public transit are anticipated during this work, it added.

It said drilling is expected to take place Monday to Friday between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm beginning January 3, 2023.

Work will progress in stages within the area highlighted on the map for approximately two weeks. Drilling will move along this section of the corridor gradually. Equipment movement and set up may occur in the overnight period between 12 am and 5 am. Work may be rescheduled or extended due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

This information is as of: December 22, 2022.
