Man trying to knife self subdued at hospital

An Oshawa man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act after threatening to harm himself with a knife while inside an Oshawa hospital on Wednesday.

Just before 11 am, officers were called to the Emergency department of Lakeridge Health – Oshawa regarding a distraught male. The 63-year-old male was brandished a knife and threatening to harm himself.

Officers were able to isolate the male in the triage area. But when he appeared to be harming himself with the knife, both an Arwen round and a Conducted Energy Weapon were deployed by the Tactical Support Unit.

Male suffered multiple cuts during the ordeal, but none of the injuries were serious. He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and will be charged with Carry a Concealed Weapon and Weapons Dangerous. No other injuries to staff or patients were reported.
