More restrictions due to Covid-19 announced

Whitby: As the Covid-19 situation continues to evolve, the Region of Durham announced more steps to protect the health and wellness of the community.

In order to ensure the safety of vulnerable residents in Durham Region’s Long-Term Care Homes (Hillsdale Estates, Hillsdale Terraces, Fairview Lodge and Lakeview Manor), visiting is now restricted to essential visitors only.

Essential visitors are those who have a loved one who is dying or very ill.

“No other visitors are permitted to enter the premises, including volunteers, entertainers and church groups,” said a municipal media release.

“Residents are encouraged to keep in touch with loved ones by phone or other technologies wherever possible. Essential visitors will be actively screened as they enter the premises, for the safety of facility staff and residents.

“For the safety of residents and essential visitors, all Long-Term Care staff who have travelled outside Canada are required to self-isolate for 14 days before returning to work,” it said.

Regionally operated Adult Day Programs are also suspended, effective immediately, it added.

Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter urges patience

Referring to temporary preventative actions, including closures and cancellations for community and recreation facilities and programs, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter has asked for “patience”.

“While not convenient, we appreciate the cooperation and patience of the community during this trying time and ask them to follow Health Canada’s Covid-19 best practices in their individual routines. The risk remains low in Durham Region; let’s do our best to keep it that way,” he said.

“The safety, health and well-being of the Oshawa community is our top priority. We stand together with our neighbouring municipalities, the Region and the Province with measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus and keep our residents and staff safe,” he said.
