Crime Briefs: Shotgun in backpack, street robbery

Pickering: Three people were arrested shortly after a street level robbery occurred last night at the Pickering GO station.

On Wednesday, July 17  at 9:30 pm, West Division officers were dispatched to the Pickering GO Station on Bayly Street.

Three male victims (one 14-years-old, two aged 15) said three people followed them to the Pickering GO Station and approached them as they were waiting on the platform for a train. The suspects asked to see their cell phones, money and jewelry. When the train arrived, the suspects prevented them from boarding. One of the victims ran away but was chased down, pinned against a wall and threatened. His iPhone was taken and all three suspects fled.

At 10 pm, an officer located one of the suspects driving a vehicle near the Pickering Town Centre. A second suspect was arrested after he walked up to the stopped vehicle. The third suspect was arrested after he was located sitting in a vehicle parked nearby.

Three 17-year-old males have been charged with robbery. Two of the males also face an extra charge of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

All three were later released on a Promise to Appear. Their names can’t be released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Shotgun in Backpack

A Pickering male was charged after a shotgun was found inside his backpack while he was walking through a public park.

On Wednesday, July 17 just before 11 am., officers received information about a male with a possible weapon in his backpack in the Brock Road/Finch Avenue area of Pickering. Officers located the male walking in Brock Ridge Community Park. The male cooperated when approached by officers and removed his backpack for inspection.

Officers discovered a 12-gauge shotgun inside the backpack, along with seven shotgun shells.

Faisal Aziz, age 20 of Beaton Way in Pickering has been charged with: Careless Carry of a Firearm; Careless Storage of a Firearm; Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm; Possession of a Prohibited Firearm Knowing Unauthorized; and Possession of a Prohibited Firearm with Ammunition.

He was held for a bail hearing.
