Durham Police are warning the public of several thefts from motor vehicles in Whitby during the past month.
There has been an increase of thefts from motor vehicles, specifically in the area of Brock Street and Rossland Road in Whitby. The thefts are primarily occurring when cars are being parked overnight in the homeowners’ driveways.
Most of the thefts are taking place between 11 pm to 4 am In most cases, the vehicles are unlocked. There is no suspect information at this time and investigators are hoping that video surveillance from homeowners could assist.
DRPS Tips
Here are just a few tips to protect yourself from being a victim of theft of your belongings from inside your vehicle while it is parked overnight:
- Always lock your doors when your car is parked and keep your car keys with you.
- If possible, park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
- Do not leave valuable items such as laptops, wallets, loose change or forms of identification laying in plain view inside your vehicle, even when your car doors are locked.
- Report any incidents of theft to police.
