Scam alert: Cabby switches cards with fakes

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) has arrested a cabby and has warned the public about a taxi scam.

It said there have been multiple incidents reported where a taxi driver switched customers’ debit cards with a similar card from the same bank.

The original cards are then used for fraudulent transactions until the funds are completely depleted or the account is blocked by the customer or the bank, said a TPS media release.

Police believe there may be others involved in similar scams, as well as further victims.

On Saturday, January 4, Jerron Acosta, 22, of Mississauga was arrested.

It is further alleged the individual was arrested driving a 2016 red Toyota Corolla taxi, with licence plate CKMB 471 and a City of Toronto Taxi Plate #1484.

Jerron Acosta has been charged with:

1. 31 counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
2. Possession of Schedule I Substance

Anyone who has any information, or believes they have been a victim of a taxi scam, is urged to contact police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1400.
