‘Seniors Centre Without Walls’ needs only a phone

Pickering has a new initiative, called Seniors Centre Without Walls (SCWW), that will enable older adults to participate in programs from the comfort, safety and security of their own home – and all they require is a telephone.

With the help of the Good Companions in Ottawa and the Older Adults Centres Association of Ontario (OACAO), the program is being offered to all OACAO Member Centres during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Through this approach, the Pickering can bring the programs to the people at this time of physical distancing, which is especially important in keeping our vulnerable population safe, said a city statement.

The schedule is available at pickering.ca/adults55plus, or on City of Pickering social media platforms and in various postings throughout the city.  These postings will include the phone number and log-in code to participate.  If residents register name and phone number, program staff can call you to add them.  The city will also host Spotlight Series presentations that were cancelled throughout March and April, along with some new topics, it said.

Programs will enable participants to feel connected, hear friendly voices, play some games and keep their minds sharp.  Programming began the week of May 11 with Trivia Tuesdays, Name that Tune Thursday’s, Spotlight Series information sessions and for the month of June, Pickering will celebrate Seniors Month with additional programming options.

The program runs every Tuesday from 2 pm – 2:30 pm and Thursday from 10:30 am – 11 am.  Spotlight Presentations will take place on Wednesday’s from 1 pm – 2 pm, beginning May 20. Space is limited so call 905.420.6588 or email kbradley@pickering.ca for more information or to register.
