Suspect gas leak forces building evacuation

Police and fire and emergency services had to swing early into action yesterday after a gas leak was suspected in an apartment complex in Whitby.

Officers from Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Central West Division assisted Whitby Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) to evacuate numerous tenants from 250 Hickory Street South after a possible gas leak.

“All tenant will be bused to the Abilities Center until the issue is rectified,” said a police tweet.

WFES crews on scene of a CO call-Hickory St and Dundas St. DRPS and Durham Transit assisting. Please avoid the immediate area, said a WFES tweet.

Residents were later allowed back into their apartments. No injuries were reported.
