Snow squall warning, tree closes road, power outages…

Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) and Oshawa Power reported closure of at least one road due to a fallen tree, and power outages due to gusty weather.

DRPS said Ritson Road North between Winchester Road East and Columbus Road East in Oshawa was closed last evening until further notice for a tree across the roadway.

By early evening, some 250 units across Oshawa had lost power due to high winds, according to Oshawa Power.

At 4:49 pm yesterday, Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for Uxbridge, Beaverton and northern Durham Region.

It cautioned heavy and blowing snow with possibility of snowfall exceeding 15 cm in 12 hours. It said snow squalls were expected to develop last evening and continue into Tuesday.

It said strong and gusty west to northwest winds in the wake of a sharp cold front are ushering in fresh Arctic air resulting in snow squalls across the region.

A little earlier, in a special weather statement for all of Durham Region, Environment Canada had warned of strong winds with gusts of 70 to 80 kmh.

Both Town of Whitby and City of Oshawa had issued strong wind warnings, asking residents not to place their recycling bins out to help minimize materials being blown throughout the neighbourhood.
