Watch Fraud: Do you know this ‘courier’?

Durham Police is asking residents to help solve a crime that took place early December last year.

On December 2, 2019 an unknown male, believed to be a ‘courier’ met the victim at Tim Horton’s in Whitby. The meeting involved the sale of a limited edition Panerai watch from a Kijiji ad valued at $9500, police said.

At the time of the exchange the victim confirmed the payment had been wired into his account. The victim took a photograph of the suspect in possession of the watch to confirm the sale with the buyer believed to be in Montreal, said a media release.

Post exchange, the victim realized the funds that had been placed in his account were in fact a third-party cheque. The funds were placed on hold and subsequent withdrawal due to the cheque being fraudulent, it added.

The suspect identified himself as ‘Raffi’ and is potentially operating a black Nissan motor vehicle, police added.

He is described as possibly south east Asian, short brown hair, prescription glasses. In his 30’s.
