Woman held in Snap Chat human trafficking case

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has announced that a female suspect wanted in a human trafficking investigation has been arrested in Toronto.

After a six-month investigation, members of the Human Trafficking Unit, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Unit, executed a search warrant in Toronto and arrested a 20-year-old female, said a DRPS media release.

It did not clarify the Durham connection in the case or the arrest.

In July, a 16-year-old victim reported to police that she had been recruited through Snap Chat and procured into the sex trade throughout Ontario. Police are looking for three other suspects and the investigation is ongoing, the release said adding that investigators are releasing the suspect’s photo to ensure that there are no further victims.

Szilvia Balog, age 20, of Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto, is charged with: Obtaining Sexual Services for Consideration under 18; Trafficking in Persons Under 18; Financial/Material Benefit of Trafficking Person Under 18; Material Benefit from Sexual Services; Procuring Person Under 18; Advertising Sexual Services; Sexual Exploitation of a Young Person; Unlawfully Possess Child Pornography; Robbery; Pointing a Firearm; Uttering Threats and Administer Noxious Thing.

She was held for a bail hearing.
