A five-week enforcement campaign concentrating on loitering, drug use and criminal behaviour in central Oshawa has resulted in 18 arrests and almost 100 charges, according to Durham Police.
The objective of the operation, led by Central East Division, was to provide directed enforcement in areas identified by political leaders, citizens and businesses as being locations for loitering, drug use and criminal behaviour, said a media release.
Officers conducted directed patrols, both mobile and on foot, to create a visible presence to reduce violence, decrease lawless behaviour, increase safety and improve the quality of life for members of the community. Some of the areas identified for enforcement included Memorial Park, property around City Hall, as well as local trails, green spaces and several identified businesses, it added.
The five-week proactive initiative concluded on November 14 and resulted in almost 100 charges being laid in relation to provincial offences. Some of these charges were specific to the Smoke Free Ontario Act and the Trespass to Property Act. In addition, 18 arrests were made, most involved outstanding warrants. There were 30 Liquor Licensing Act charges, most involving having alcohol in public spaces.

In addition to frontline patrol operations, the directed patrol project dedicated an additional 450 hours of enforcement and enhanced visibility. In many cases, offices approached unsheltered citizens and advised them of social support programs available to them.
