The Ontario government is investing $20 million in infrastructure to facilitate the construction of up to 7,934 new homes in Clarington, according to Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham.
He stated that the Regional Municipality of Durham will use the funding to expand Bowmanville Avenue from Baseline Road to south of Regional Highway 2.
“The Bowmanville Avenue expansion is a necessary step towards providing up to 7,934 new housing units, expanding key infrastructure, and connecting our community to reliable and expanded roadways in Clarington,” said McCarthy.
The funding is being delivered through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, which includes $400 million to help build, repair and maintain municipal roads, bridges and culverts that will promote housing growth in communities across Ontario, said the statement.
“We are thrilled with this significant investment from the province for the widening of Bowmanville Avenue. It is a major infrastructure project that will unlock thousands of new housing units and connect residents to jobs, major highways and Bowmanville’s vibrant downtown,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer.
“Expanding Bowmanville Avenue, one of the busiest roads in our fast-growing community, will bring better transit and a better quality of life for our residents. This announcement demonstrates what can be accomplished when different levels of government work together. I want to thank the Ontario government for their generous support and the Region of Durham for their work improving our Regional roads. This $20 million project is a big deal that will make our residents’ lives better without raising their property taxes,” addedClarington Mayor Adrian Foster.
