October 7: Police on alert across Durham + more

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday announced they are on alert and ready to face any emergency in any part of Durham on Tuesday, October 7 — the anniversary of the 2023 Hamas attack on an Israeli music festival.

“As we approach October 7, we recognize that this date holds significance for many in our community. Out of an abundance of caution, DRPS will have an enhanced presence in the community to ensure everyone feels safe and supported,” said a DRPS statement.

“We continue to work closely with leaders of our faith-based communities on an ongoing basis to share information, address concerns, and help ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” it added.

Since the 2023 event there have been several hate-related incidents, mostly across southern Durham, leading to some municipalities such as Whitby moving to ban hate from public property (see below).

Large Police Presence

DRPS also issued a cryptic alert yesterday asking the public to stay away from a locality in Oshawa.

“Intersection in Oshawa at Ritson Road North and Taunton Road East is currently shut down due to a police investigation. Avoid area,” it said.

No further details were released.

The police, earlier, issued an advisory concerning Pickering.

“There will be large police presence in the area of William Jackson Drive and Taunton Road West, in Pickering, for an active police investigation. There is no threat to public safety,” said a police alert.

It did not elaborate further.

Crash Causes Power Outage

Durham police yesterday announced the closure of Lakeridge Road south of Victoria Street West, in the Town of Ajax.

It was closed for a collision investigation. Please find an alternative route, police said.

Meanwhile, utility provider, Elexicon Energy informed of an outage due to a vehicle collision in Ajax affecting Lakeridge South, Audley Road South, Bayley Street East, and Shoal Point Road.

“Crews have been dispatched. We will provide an estimated time of restoration (ETR) when more information is available. We appreciate your patience,” said an alert.
