Regional Council to discuss 2026 budget on December 17

The proposed 2026 budget with a tax guideline of 6.5 per cent will be discussed by the Regional Council on December 17.

The regional council will also  discuss the water supply and sanitary tax at the same meeting. The 2025 water supply and sanitary sewer user rates were increased by 5 per cent (see below).

“The Regional Council will consider the proposed 2026 Property Tax Supported Business Plans and Budget, and the Water Supply and Sanitary Sewerage Business Plans and Budget at the following Committee and Council meetings,” said a region statement to Durham Post.

  • Special Committee of the Whole Meeting: December 11 and 12 (if required).
  • Regional Council meeting: December 17.

The statement advised that residents can watch these regional council and committee meetings live online at durham.ca/Live.

The region clarified that 6.5 per cent [of the proposed tax] is its own portion or 3.5 per cent of total bill impact.

Proposed 2026 Durham Tax Increases
  • Durham Region: 6.5% (own portion 3.5%)
  • Durham Police: 3%
  • Township of Scugog: 5.54% own portion
  • Township of Brock 4.87% (own portion 3.79%)
  • City of Oshawa: 3.98% own portion
  • Town of Whitby: 3.49%
  • Municipality of Clarington: 3% (own portion 0.99%)
  • Township of Uxbridge: 1.28% own portion

All of the above tax increases have yet to be approved or may automatically come into force (see below).
