Clarington councillor arrested, released, to appear in court

Peterborough Police Service yesterday announced that it has laid charges against Clarington Local Ward 3 Councillor Corinna Traill for uttering threats, according to Mayor Adrian Foster.

The alleged threats were reportedly made to a former mayoral candidate and a retired police officer over upcoming municipal elections.

“On August 28, I received a voicemail from Clarington councillor Corinna Traill. Corinna directed me to stay out of next years mayoral race to allow her friend [full name] to run unencumbered. Miss Traill made it clear that if I did not, she would come to my home, kill me, and sexually assault my wife, then sexually assault her again,” alleged the former mayoral candidate.

“This matter has been reported to the police and I have every confidence that they will take appropriate action to protect my family and ensure accountability,” he said.

The Arrest And Release

Yesterday Peterborough police said a 41-year-old Clarington woman is facing two charges after a three-month investigation by the Peterborough Police Service (PPS).

“In early September 2025, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) asked the Peterborough Police Service to undertake an investigation involving a Clarington councillor, a former police officer with DRPS and a current DRPS member,” said a PPS statement.

The investigation was related to communication made to a potential mayoral candidate for the Municipality of Clarington.

“As a result of the investigation, 41-year-old Corinna Traill of Clarington was arrested on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, and charged with: Utter Threats X2. The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court [on] January 13, 2026,” said the PPS.

“As the matter is now before the court, there is nothing further to add,” it said.

No Further Comments from Clarington: Mayor Foster

“It is important to allow the court to determine the outcome of this case. I want to affirm to residents that Clarington Council is focused on serving our community and we will continue to do so,” said Foster.

“As this is an ongoing matter before the courts, the Municipality of Clarington cannot make any further comments at this time,” he added.
