Five bridges in eastern Durham are either to be be replaced or rebuilt as part of the announced extension of the GO Train from the City Oshawa via Courtice to Bowmanville in the Municipality of Clarington,
These bridges include:
- Albert Street Bridge in Oshawa,
- Wilson Road Bridge in Oshawa,
- Simcoe Street Bridge in Oshawa,
- Farewell Street Pedestrian Bridge in Oshawa, and
- Green Road Bridge in Bowmanville.
Metrolinx, the operator of GO recently announced a two-year closure for Simcoe Street Bridge for bridge and roadway reconstruction. It said the closure is needed to allow for additional rail track on the CPKC line underneath. The announcement drew resident criticism of the long-term closure.
Metrolinx said Albert Street Bridge will be demolished. It did not say if it will be replaced (see below).
There will be a new rail bridge constructed at Wilson Road, while the pedestrian bridge on Farewell Street will be demolished and a new bridge constructed in its place.
Green Road will see a new bridge construction, said Metrolinx.
