As food bank usage in Ontario reaches unprecedented levels heading into the holiday season, Ajax MPP Rob Cerjanec is calling on the provincial government to act and to follow the example set by other provinces that are repurposing surplus US alcohol inventory to fund local food banks and charitable causes.
“Food bank usage is at record highs and this government is not helping families get ahead. This is a simple step that can provide some relief for overstretched food banks just in time for the holidays.” said MPP Cerjanec.
Provinces such as Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia are directing proceeds from remaining US made alcohol products to charities.
$80mn US Liquor in LCBO Storage
Ontario has the resources to do the same. About $80 million worth of American alcohol pulled off the shelves remains in the LCBO’s storage, said the MPP.
He said instead of allowing surplus US alcohol to remain unused, the government could authorize its sale or liquidation and direct the proceeds to food banks and charities across the province.
Food bank usage in Ontario is at an all-time high with over one million people using them the past year and families need help now. Every available resource should be used to support people who are struggling to put food on the table.
“Ontario should not sit on its hands. By putting existing inventory to work, the province can provide immediate relief to food banks and help feed more families during one of the most challenging times of the year,” the MPP added.
