Ajax ‘disappointed’ over conservation setback

Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier expressed his “great disappointment” over the passage of what he termed as the “deeply unpopular” Schedule 6 along with the Ontario budget on Tuesday.

Ajax had apposed Schedule 6 saying it reduces the decision-making authority of conservation authorities. The Town has been fighting a recent Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO) that allows building of Durham Live, partly on wetlands.

It has asked that Lower Duffins Creek be left out of the MZO.

“Despite widespread opposition from many environmental groups, hundreds of municipalities, Indigenous representatives and tens of thousands of people, the government pressed forward, effectively striping the powers from conservation authorities (CAs),” said Mayor Collier.
