BLM Bowmanville: Call to cut DRPS budget by 10%

On a calm beautiful Sunday after some 75 to 100 people turned up at a peaceful Black Lives Matter rally in Bowmanville.

It was hosted by Raven Darkholme and Erin Nicole.

People of all ages came wearing masks and carrying bottles of water and BLM placards. Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster, attended the rally. There was no visible police presence.

Corinna Traill, local Ward 3 Councillor in the Municipality of Clarington, said she plans to bring forward a motion to Clarington Council in September that will encompass the recommendations made by the Durham Black Accountability Coalition.

“One of the recommendations of the Durham Black Accountability Coalition is to reduce DRPS funding by a minimum 10% of its $241.4 million budget and instead invest $24.14 million into Black and Indigenous community-based alternatives to policing. This reallocation will support mental health, social/economic well being, crisis intervention, harm reduction, housing initiatives, and de-escalation techniques.

“One revelation that may particularly shock and dismay Clarington taxpayers is that DRPS does not have to disclose its budget publicly. Although we, as elected Municipal representatives, go through the Clarington budget meticulously – often line by line – during public meetings, DRPS is not required to do this. If we want to enhance accountability, DRPS must be required to make line-by-line public disclosure of its annual budget,” she said in a statement posted on social media following the rally.

  1. Corinna Traill is an idiot. Just an attention seeking clown. If this was about purple rainbows she would voice her leftest opinion on that too. Go away. There is no racial problems here with the police in Clarington. Zero evidence to support your cause.

  2. Corinna Traill IS indeed an idiot, as are Foster and anyone else taking these Marxist morons seriously.

  3. Our tax dollars need to remain with the police force. If you want money for mental health ask Trudeau. If you want money for housing ask Rob Ford. Stop expecting tax payers to support criminal behaviour using BLM. We are a proud hard working community with no racial issues. Stop spreading hatred blaming hard working officers who put their lives on the line every day for all lives. Stop blaming police for responding to violence, robbery and domestic disputes. That is what we pay them for.

I dont want my tax dollars to support BLM. I want them to support every life mattering.

  4. Wow take a look at these idiot comments. Tax dollars won’t support BLM, 10% will support programs that help people stay away from
Crime, or mental health resources. Police shouldn’t be handling a vast array of cases like this.
Instead of attacking corinna or trudeau, how about attacking those that use excessive force.
Do the police really need brand new cars every 5 years. Or can that be extended another 3-5 years. That alone would save 5-10%. Majority of these comments are prob police officer, with their highschool diplomas and 3 months of training.
You think that’s sufficient? The whole force needs restructuring. Your tax dollars are paying for speeding cameras, AND more police to enforce the same areas for speeding. Talk a out a waste of tax dollars.
