The Municipality of Clarington has announced the appointment of David Speed as Clarington’s new Fire Chief and Director of Emergency and Fire Services.

“On behalf of Clarington Council, I want to welcome Dave as he takes the helm of our fire department. With his front-line experience and proven leadership record, I’m confident that Clarington will continue to provide exceptional fire protection and emergency response services to our community,” said Mayor Adrian Foster.

Chief Speed comes to Clarington from Whitby Fire and Emergency Services, where he was Fire Chief and Head of Operations. He began his career in emergency services in 1995 with Markham Fire and Emergency Services and joined Whitby as their Chief Fire Prevention Officer in 2006. He was the Oshawa Fire Services Deputy Chief from 2012 to 2014, and rejoined Whitby as their Fire Chief in 2014.

Chief Speed has lived in Clarington for the past 10 years. He and his wife, Barb, have four grown children and are the proud grandparents of three grandchildren.

“My family and I love living in Clarington, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Municipality of Clarington in the Fire Chief role. Clarington Emergency and Fire Services has a long tradition of providing excellent service. I look forward to learning from the women and men of this Department as we continue to provide high-quality services amid community growth and the challenges it will bring,” said Chief Speed.

Chief Speed will assume his new role in Clarington on Monday, February 27, 2023.

In December, Clarington said Deputy Fire Chief Randy Cowan has been appointed as the Acting Fire Chief.

It has earlier announced that former Fire Chief Mariano Perini had been recruited to a new leadership role with the Office of the Fire Marshal.
