Covid Impact: Canada Day event cancelled

The Town of Whitby yesterday announced the cancellation of its annual Canada Day celebrations in light of Covid-19 and the urgent need to continue physical distancing to prevent the spread of the virus.

The event was previously planned to be held on July 1 at Victoria Fields and the Waterfront.

“Whitby’s annual Canada Day event is a major undertaking, attracting more than 40,000 people and taking many months of planning ,” said Matt Gaskell, Chief Administrative Officer. “While it is disappointing, the health and well-being of our residents and staff is our number one priority. Proceeding with the planning of this year’s event is not something that is possible right now due to the current public health crisis.”

On Friday, April 3, the town announced the cancellation of all town events, town-supported events and third-party event permits until June 30. The need for continued cancellations will be re-assessed as the situation evolves. These actions support the provincial order to prohibit organized public events and social gatherings of more than five people.
