UPDATE: Driver leaves two hurt and flees crashed car

Two passengers suffered serious injuries while the driver fled on foot following a collision in Pickering on Thursday afternoon.

On October 3 at 2:10 pm, members of West Division were called to Brock Road and Clements Road in Pickering, regarding a two vehicle collision. A 2008 Dodge Charger was northbound on Brock Road travelling at a high rate of speed when it collided with the rear end of a transport truck at Clements Road.

The Dodge struck the rear axle of a 2014 Freightliner with a trailer, causing the Dodge to spin and travel north west through the intersection. The vehicle came to a stop facing southbound in the southbound curb lane. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but was arrested a short distance away. There were two injured passengers in the Dodge Charger that were trapped in the vehicle.

The female passenger in her 20s was air lifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious injuries, while the male passenger also in his 20s was transported via ambulance to a Toronto-area trauma centre with critical injuries. They are both expected to make a full recovery. The driver was uninjured as a result of the collision.

The driver of the Dodge Charger, Jessie Counsell, age 25 of Grey Street in Brantford is charged with: Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm x2; Leave Accident Scene Cause Bodily Harm x2; Impaired Operation of Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm x2; Exceed Alcohol Concentration Cause Bodily Harm; Novice Driver – BAC Above Zero; Drive While Under Suspension; Drive Motor Vehicle- No Insurance and Use Plate Not Authorized. He was held for a bail hearing.

Collision investigators from the Traffic Services Branch were called and the roadway was closed for several hours to collect evidence and conduct their investigation. The investigation is ongoing. Police would like to hear from any witnesses to this collision who have not already spoken with police.
