Durham Hero: Officer, spouse help save man’s life

Back in February Sergeant Keith Richards and his wife Leslie were working out at L.A. Fitness in Whitby when Keith observed a male collapse on the floor of the squash court.

The 60-year-old male was in medical crisis and Keith immediately summoned Leslie, who is a nurse. The male was in cardiac arrest and had no vital signs. Leslie began CPR and a call was made to 911.

Staff brought an AED (automated external defibrillator) to the location and Keith took over CPR while Leslie hooked the male up to the AED. The man’s vital signs did not return after the first shock, so Keith and Leslie continued to provide medical assistance until EMS and Fire Services arrived, said a police statement.

The male was fortunately revived and transported to hospital. Leslie and Keith are commended for their quick actions in assisting this male. They were both instrumental in the male surviving this medical episode, DRPS said.
