The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced that it has contracted Turf War Inc. to carry out weed spraying on hard-surfaced centre medians along Regional roads in the Town of Ajax, City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, and Town of Whitby.
According to the region, the weed control work is intended to protect public infrastructure by reducing long-term maintenance and restoration costs. Weed roots can cause damage to asphalt and concrete surfaces, as well as shift or lift interlocking bricks.
To minimize the impact on traffic, the targeted spraying will be performed primarily at night. The centre medians are located along busy roads and are not used by pedestrians.
The work is scheduled to begin in about two weeks, though weather conditions may affect the timeline. Signage will be posted on all treated medians.
Durham Region is reminding residents that the weed control treatment is focused on preserving infrastructure and will be carried out with safety precautions in place.
