Total burn ban; ‘Stay at Home Storytime’

Pickering Fire Services has issued a total ban on open air burning, in part to ensure firefighters are available to respond to larger emergencies during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The city does not allow open air burning, except for farming and agricultural purposes. Residents with Open Air Burning Acknowledgements have been asked not to burn until further notice, said an announcement.

This complete fire ban will help minimize public exposure for firefighters and help maintain physical distancing protocols during the Covid-19 pandemic, it added.

Library Introduces Stay at Home Storytime

In an effort to keep the community connected and safe, Pickering Public Library (PPL) is now offering Stay at Home Storytime (live online storytimes).

As part of its ongoing efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19, all PPL locations remain closed. The digital Library continues to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Clients without a library card can get a card through the online membership page on the library website.

Starting Wednesday, April 8, at 10 am, PPL will provide live, online storytimes via Facebook Live daily (excluding weekends and holidays). “In these uncertain times we are reaching out to let the community know they can still connect and engage, even while social distancing,” said a city statement.

To access the Facebook Live program, clients do not need a Facebook account. Simply visit the Pickering Public Library Facebook page during the scheduled dates and times, and join the experience while staying at home.

While the library is closed, clients can still access the digital collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMusic, eMovies and eLearning resources. Clients can also set up appointments to connect with staff via ZOOM or email us at help@picnet.org.

Visit the library’s online calendar for updates.
