Flood Outlook in effect until Friday November 1

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement and is forecasting rainfall amounts of up to 30 to 50 mm beginning this afternoon and continuing into Friday.

The heaviest rainfall is predicted to occur Thursday evening (15 to 25 mm), and strong northwesterly to westerly wind gusts of 70 km/h are expected to occur Friday morning into Friday afternoon, said the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca).

The predicted rainfall may result in higher than normal water levels and flows in all Durham streams and creeks, resulting in dangerous flow conditions especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Localized flooding can be expected on roadways and in low lying and flood prone areas.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents and children to stay away from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams. Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Residents near the Lake Ontario shoreline should exercise caution as high wave activity is expected as a result of high wind speeds.

This Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook will be in effect through to Friday November 1, 2019.

The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority will continue to monitor the conditions of the streams and creeks and will provide updates as required.
