Homes, stores evacuated after major gas leak

Durham emergency services swung into action yesterday after a major gas leak was discovered in a plaza in Whitby.

“Large gas leak in the area of Garden Street and Taunton in [a] plaza on south east corner,” said a Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) tweet.

“Members of DRPS CW Division are evacuating neighbouring homes and stores. We are working with Enbridge Gas
and will advise when we clear the area,” it added.

DRPS closed off the area on Taunton Eastbound at McKinney to the entrance to the Plaza at Sportchek east of Garden.

Police did not say if any were hurt or what was the cause of the leak and what kind of gas it was. Further information is awaited.
