Get your permit before you renovate: Pickering

Pickering has reminded residents that while they are staying home and doing their part to stop the spread of Covid-19, the regular building permit process still applies for all residential building/renovation projects.

Although City Hall is closed to the public, staff are still on duty, distributed between City Hall and home offices, to ensure the continued delivery of essential and critical services, said a city statement.

Building Services staff are available to assist residents with completing their building permit applications, and are processing permits and conducting inspections. They can be reached Monday to Friday, between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, at 905.420.4631 or building@pickering.ca.

“Emergency legislation as of the date of this publication allows many types of residential construction,” said Kyle Bentley, Chief Building Official. “Despite changes to some of the city’s service deliveries, the legal requirements of the Ontario Building Code Act are still in effect and will be enforced. I encourage residents to get in touch and learn first-hand from our professionals what projects can be completed, and how to do that safely.”

Examples of projects that may require a building permit include:

  • A new deck, shed, or garage
  • Finishing the basement in a new home
  • Creating an accessory dwelling unit in a new home

Building permits regulate types of construction permitted in the community, and ensure the safety of the property owner, professional contractors, and the community at large. Approved plans must comply with the Ontario Building Code, local zoning by-laws, and other applicable laws and regulations, said the statement.
