Grade 6 kid Mika was Oshawa Mayor-for-a-Day

The City of Oshawa had a new mayor yesterday — Mika, a grade 6 Oshawa student.

She enjoyed a full agenda as Mayor-for-a-Day, with guided tours of the Oshawa Executive Airport, Fire Hall 5, Animal Services and City Hall with Mayor Carter. Mayor Carter and Mika went for lunch at her favourite Oshawa restaurant. She also wore the Chain of Office, said a city media release.

To celebrate Local Government Week (October 20-26), students in grades 5, 6, and 7 who live or study in Oshawa were invited to participate in the Mayor-for-a-Day contest. Participants were asked to submit a letter to Oshawa’s Mayor explaining why they would like to be ‘Mayor for a Day’, and to describe their vision for the future of Oshawa.

“Congratulations to Mika on being selected as the 2019 Mayor-for-a-Day,” said Mayor Dan Carter. “Mika shows great pride in our city. Her creativity and environmental awareness are admirable. I wish her all the best in the future and thank her for spending the day with me.”
