Heavy snow, strong winds expected tonight

Significant snowfall is expected overnight Friday through Saturday evening, according to Environment Canada.

It said an approaching low pressure system will bring snowfall to Southwestern Ontario beginning overnight Friday which will spread eastward to the Golden Horseshoe on Saturday morning.

Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are expected. Some locations may transition over to periods of rain late Saturday. Strong winds gusting up to 60 km/h may also create areas of local blowing snow, it said.

The snow or rain will change to flurries overnight Saturday night, it added.

Visibility will be reduced in areas of blowing snow, which can make travel hazardous. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.

In Northern Durham Region, Environment Canada said snowfall beginning early Saturday morning can amount to 15 to 20 cm.

In addition, lake effect snow is also expected to begin behind this system, which will create more snow for areas near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
