No amalgamation of municipalities in Durham

The Province of Ontario has decided that there will be no amalgamation of upper and lower-tier municipalities as a result of the provincial Regional Government Review.

“In Durham Region, we are fortunate to have clearly defined upper- and local-tier roles and responsibilities. This ensures that services are planned, funded and delivered on a broad geographical scale. We work together, in collaboration with the eight local area municipalities, to address common challenges,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer.

“In February, all nine heads of council (in Durham Region) collectively conveyed our productive and strong track record; showcasing how we work together to serve our residents. We summarized our valuable services, innovative ideas, and a demonstrated dedication to customer service,” he said.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the province to improve municipal service delivery. We are fortunate in Durham Region to have a large rural area in the north and urban south. Through our two-tier structure, we work together to ensure that services are planned, funded and delivered in a cost-effective manner,” Henry added.

Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell said: “I want to thank the Government of Ontario for clearly listening to the important feedback they received from both residents and municipalities through their Regional Government Review.”

Our residents shared with us through our 2018 Community Survey that they believe we deliver good value for their tax dollars. Our Council’s Goals make it a priority to continue to operate in a fiscally responsible way that respects our residents and the trust they place in their local government,” he said.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Ontario, as well as other levels of government, to serve our residents and ensure a healthy and sustainable future for our community,” said Mitchell.
