Ontario sets $36.8mn aside for a new school in Clarington

Todd McCarthy

The Ontario government has provided the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPRDSB) with approval to award the tender for the new Northglen Neighbourhood School in Bowmanville, Clarington.

This is supported by an investment of $36.8 million, said Todd McCarthy, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Durham.

The new Northglen Neighbourhood School will be located at 140 Northglen Boulevard in Bowmanville. Once completed, this project will deliver 786 elementary spaces and 73 licenced childcare spaces for local families.

“We are very excited about the building of this much needed school that will help support our growing student population in the Bowmanville area,” says Jaine Klassen Jeninga, KPRDSB Chairperson. “We will be moving forward this spring to maximize the full construction season, and we appreciate the continued support of the provincial government on this important capital project for the students and families of this community.”

The investment is part of Ontario’s commitment to providing about $15 billion to support school construction, repair, and renewal over 10 years. Since 2018, the government has approved or supported the development of nearly 300 school-related projects including childcare, of which more than 100 are actively under construction, said a provincial statement.

“The funding for a new school in the Northglen Neighbourhood in Bowmanville is great news for our community,” said McCarthy. “This investment will ensure families and students have access to a quality learning environment in the years ahead.”

Additionally, Ontario is taking action to ensure that school board capital assets are used effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of growing communities, support student learning and ensure value for taxpayer dollars. The Better Schools and Student Outcomes Act, 2023 empowers decision-makers to build modern schools faster by better utilizing school capacity, reducing barriers for school boards to facilitate agreements for schools in multi-use buildings such as condo towers, and shortening planning time through design standardization when constructing, renovating, or making additions to schools, the statement said.
