Oshawa set­­s four building records in August

Oshawa set four building records for the month of August 2019, along with an increase in construction activity.

  • Highest August Total construction value of $128,227,500 (surpassing the 2014 record by $60 million)
  • Highest August Residential construction value of $72,520,900 (surpassing the 2013 record by $31 million)
  • Highest August Governmental/Institutional value of $41,214,000 (surpassing the 2010 record by $28 million)
  • Highest August for Apartment Units created (214 units surpassing the 2013 record of 206)

During the month, the city issued 98 building permits for a total of $128 million in construction value. Of that total, $72.5 million in Residential construction, $41.2 in Institutional, $12 million in Industrial and $2.5 million in Commercial construction was issued.

An additional 11,107 square metres of new institutional floor space, 9,945 square metres of industrial and 255 square metres of commercial floor space were created in August. There were 235 new residential units consisting of 214 apartment units, 12 accessory dwelling units, five single-detached and two semi-detached dwelling units.

Major projects issued in August 2019 included:

Oshawa Coldstream Retirement Development Limited – 7-storey apartment building (1224 Coldstream Dr.) – $40,000,000

  • Ontario Tech University – 5-storey academic student building (40 Founders Dr.) – $38,670,000
  • Trent University Durham GTA – 6-storey student building (75 Thornton Rd. S.) – $25,590,000
  • Piret (1000 Thornton Rd.) Holdings Inc. – industrial building (980 Thornton Rd. S.) – $11,934,500

Oshawa’s year-to-date total construction value is more than $270 million with still four months remaining in 2019.

“Oshawa’s surge in building permits stems from a number of large projects that are under development across the city,” says Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “We broke four building records alone in August, indicating once again that Oshawa is a very attractive and competitive city for investment.”
