Oshawa’s Adequate Heat By-law amended

Landlords reminded to provide adequate heat

The City of Oshawa is advising landlords and tenants that the City’s Adequate Heat By-law has been amended, including an update to the timeframe for minimum air temperature.

The By-law now requires rented or leased living accommodations to have a minimum air temperature of at least 22 degrees Celsius between September 1st to June 15th of each year. This timeframe aligns with the requirements of the Provincial Residential Tenancies Act, 2006.

Additionally, failure to comply with the by-law can result in penalties of $250 per day, per rental unit.

Tenants are encouraged to contact their landlord prior to filing a complaint with the City. Service Oshawa receives complaints about the Adequate Heat By-law and directs them to Municipal Law Enforcement for investigation.
