Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is undertaking a detailed design and an environmental assessment to widen westbound Highway 401 from Lake Ridge Road to Salem Road, according to Rob Cerjanec, MPP for Ajax.
Last October, MTO told Durham Post (see below) that it was looking at interim solutions to the Salem Road bottleneck. “MTO is also conducting a detailed traffic study in the Highway 401 and Highway 412 connection to determine if there are any potential interim solutions to improve traffic operations prior to the proposed express-collector expansion,” said the statement.
Traffic Bottleneck
Traffic bottleneck westbound from Brock Street till Salem Road has been the bane of commuters rushing from Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington and further east, to work and school. The bottleneck continues to delay traffic throughout the day even at non-peak traffic times.
“As detailed design needs to be completed before any construction can begin, it will still take some time for improvements to take place, but this is a positive step in the right direction,” said the MPP.
“This follows our call to the Government of Ontario to alleviate congestion in this section of Highway 401, and it shows the power of what we can do by working together,” he added.
