Pedestrian serious after tow-truck hit

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) yesterday said two pedestrians in Whitby were rushed to hospital after they were hit by a tow-truck.

One of the pedestrians was in serious condition and was airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto, they said.

The collision occurred in the area of Valleywood Drive and Taunton Road East just off Brock Street.

“Serious collision at Valleywood Drive and Taunton Road East in Whitby. Road closures in the area. Please avoid the area,” said a DRPS tweet yesterday.

Officers were advising motorists to avoid the area of Brock Street and Taunton Road due to heavy traffic. The area will be closed for several hours for the collision investigation, it added.

COLLISION UPDATE: It appears two pedestrians were struck by a tow truck at the intersection of Taunton Road and Valleywood Drive in Whitby. They were taken to a trauma centre by land ambulance. Taunton Road closed in both directions in the area, said another tweet.

A few minutes later, DRPS said that one of the pedestrians “has serious injuries. One party will be airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma center”.

Road closures took a few hours as police gathered evidence.

Road was later reopened at Valleywood Drive and Taunton Rd E in Whitby, DRPS said.

  1. I cross at that intersection every weekday from my job at Whitby Superstore. I have to watch for vehicles turning right and left all the time that do not check for pedestrians. I came out Friday March 6 near 3:00, called my family right away to say it was not me who was struck.
