The City of Pickering recently saw the inauguration of the Altona Towns community, which comprises 27 homes that operate on their own coordinated use of solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, and energy storage.
This will allow homeowners to save money and reduce emissions by supplying their own power needs, said a city statement.
It said Pickering has been recognized nationally for its innovative and leading work in sustainability and this landmark project is an inspiration for future residential development.
On Friday, Pickering announced that its staff have been asked to begin the process of updating the city’s Sustainable Design Standards for new development and re-development.
Green development practices have evolved and it’s important that these guidelines reflect the innovative green best practices and technology of today, as well as the work being done by both the city and Region of Durham to address climate change, support urban forests, pollinators, waste reduction, water conservation, energy efficiency, and access to local food and greenspaces, said a city statement.
