Pickering works to bring Atlantic salmon back

Pickering is participating in the ‘Bring Back the Salmon’ program, in partnership with Pickering Public Library (PPL), the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, and Ontario Power Generation.

An Atlantic salmon hatchery is on display at PPL (Central branch) until the end of May, where residents can view the 100 eggs as they wait to hatch. Once hatched, they will be released into Duffins Creek and contribute to the overall number released into Lake Ontario each year, said a city announcement.

The Atlantic salmon population has significantly decreased due to environmental degradation, ecosystem changes, and over-fishing. The Bring Back the Salmon program aims to support the restoration of the species and has helped bring over 6 million Atlantic salmon back to Lake Ontario.

The program also increases environmental awareness and engagement among residents, the announcement added.

This is the sixth consecutive year that the city is participating in the program.
